Appytimes

A short weekly podcast about free and cheap applications for the ipod Touch

Appytimes Episode 29 - Bust A Move

Posted by appytimes on January 31st, 2010

BustAMove.jpgHi there App. fans, hope you’re all well this weekend. This weeks application has been in my watch list for weeks and weeks waiting for it to drop in price but it hasn’t and seeing as this game is responsible for taking up much of my time back in the Playstation days, I decided to just go and purchase the game. And what a game it is. For some reason it’s called Puzzle Bobble but if you search for “Bust A Move” then you will find it.

Not much else to report this week so I’m going to sign off and say until next time….. Keep Appy.

Appytimes Episode 28 - Doodle Jump

Posted by appytimes on January 24th, 2010

DoodleJump.jpg

Hello there App. fans, hope you are all well. After seeing loads and loads of tweets from various people boasting about their high scores and after many recommendations I finally decided to download this fine game called Doodle Jump. Its been it the top five of the charts for some time and the fact that it’s yet another 59p game, I knew it was going to be pretty good.

How glad I was that I did. The great thing about this game is it’s simplicity and it’s addictiveness. Another great game for the throne, this one has had me trying to break the 20000 barrier for days but I just can’t seem to do that. Seeing my tweeps posting their scores which are way higher than mine doesn’t help either, but one day…. oh yes… one day I shall get into the high rankings…… Well, until something else comes along and saps all my free times that is.

I had many emails in response to last weeks application, Flixster. Many of them were recommending another app. thatoffers the same and more. This was called “Now Playing” and I have since downloaded it and will look into it. Thanks guys.

So that’s about it for this week, the sun is shining and It’s about time I went outside and exposed my pasty white skin to the sun.

Until next time…… Keep Appy.

Appytimes Episode 27 - Flixster

Posted by appytimes on January 17th, 2010

Flixster.jpgWell, I’m going to keep this short because the tossers here at Podbean lost the previous post I made and I just don’t have the patience to spend another hour writing and uploading. So….

Great App, go get it, please write a review on itunes about Appytimes. I loved the snow but am now glad it’s gone and I love my Xbox. Thank you.

Appytimes Episode 26 - Mini Squadron

Posted by appytimes on January 10th, 2010

mini-squadron.jpgHello there. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a peaceful new year. Its been five weeks since I put out a show and i apologise for that. I missed one week and then what with Crimbo and the fact that I bought an Xbox, I just got slack and found it easier not to set up my recording equipment. Lazy I know but I hope not to let that happen again.

Over the break I have been playing this weeks game almost constantly. Mini Squadron is a fantastic little aeroplane 2D dog fighting game. Seriously guys, this game has swallowed up more of my time than any other app. I have bought for the ithingy (with the exception of Twittelator). At £1.79 it is one of the more expensive applications but it really is worth every penny.

So go and treat yourself to this wonderful game or check out the lite version.

Appytimes Episode 25 - Christmas Apps. Special

Posted by appytimes on December 6th, 2009

ChristmasSounds.jpgSleepsTilChristmas.jpgXmasRadio.jpg

Hello App. fans and welcome to the Christmas application special…. Well, they’re not that special really, just a few cheap or free apps for you to waste your time with.

Finally feeling complete again but I’ll wager that it won’t last long. My little’uns seem to have the lurgy once again and I put that entirely down to the fact that playschool is teeming with germs, It’s only a matter of time before I’m feeling under the weather once more.

Anyway, enough of that. Christmas, yeaaahhh!!! we love it don’t we eh? and I have been looking at the app store for a few things to make you smile but all said and done, only the “Sleeps Til Christmas” is any good really and that’s only because my kids love it so much and that’s worth the admission price alone.

So that’s it really, nothing else to do except to say Until next week ……. Keep Appy!

Appytimes Episode 24 - Flick Sports Fishing

Posted by appytimes on November 29th, 2009

FlickFishing.jpgWell hello everybody. Finally got back in front of the microphone this weeks after an unplanned hiatus. I was feeling horrible for a good two weeks with a flu-like illness and then a nasty bout of Sinusitis. As you can hear from this weeks audio, I’m still horribly bunged up but am feeling alot better.

While I was being a big wuss laid up in bed, two of my great buddies took the reins and made their own reviews and I have to say a massive “Cheers” to them. @CartBozman and @Feathers44 I salute you. Thanks guys, you both did a great job.

Well this weeks app. came in handy during my “sicky” and I played it for so long and I’m still finding myself almost addicted to it and yet again it’s only 59p. Honestly, these 59p apps. really do offer the best value for money.

I think this game is pretty much mostly about luck but it does have that “I wonder what fish I’ve caught here” feel to it and there are plenty of challenges to keep you going and to help drain you ithingy battery.

That’s all for this week. If you fancy sending in a review of your own, then just send an mp3 to the email address below and i’ll use it for an upcoming episode. So until next week ……. Keep Appy.

Appytimes Episode 23 - RSS Player

Posted by appytimes on November 22nd, 2009

RSSPlayer.jpgHello App. fans and welcome to another special edition of Appytimes. I say “special” because once again I am feeling under the weather. If fact, I started to feel even worse through the week and took the very rare decision to stay home from work. But once again, someone offered to step into the breech and once again has done a terrific job.

This weeks Hero is Mike who I know from the “Treks In Sci-Fi” forums and often enjoy engaging in some harmless banter on Twitter. Some time ago he suggested that I cover this weeks application and I had to admit to him that I thought It may be a little “too technical” for me and I think I may have suggested he could do a guest spot for me. And he’s done a terrific job for me.

I have to admit that when he first suggested “RSS Player to me, I was a little uncertain as I sync my ithingy to my PC almost every day so I don’t really need the feature. But Mike has done such a good job with this review that I may have to reconsider. One small problem though is that currently, the application is not available. It seems there have been a few issues since a recent update and you cannot find it o the app. store at the moment, but he swears by this and seeing as this isn’t the first time he’s mentioned it to me, then I felt I had to release the episode. As soon as It’s back in the store, I will be purchasing it for myself and having a little play around with it.

So that’s about it for this week. I want to thank Mike very much indeed for covering for me this week. Two weeks now I have had two excellent people step in and host the show for me and I appreciate it so much. I’m feeling a little better now and hope to be back in front of the mic next week but I would also like to say this.

If anyone else has a particular application that they would like to review themselves, then please send them in. I can stick them in here and there and it would be a great way to discover some more apps. for myself to try (like this weeks RSS Player). So please, don’t be shy, bet you mics. out and send in those reviews.

Once again my big thanks go out to Mike and Boz for covering my Butt. Big hugs to you and all that matey blokey stuff.

Until next time….. Keep Appy.

Appytimes Episode 22 - Scramble 2

Posted by appytimes on November 16th, 2009

Scramble2.jpg

Hi all.

I’m feeling pretty bad at the moment. I seem to have been struck down with a man cold and my sinuses and head are giving me all sorts of grief. I announced on Twitter earlier today that I wasn’t going to release an episode this week but there was one bright shining star that came to my rescue.

My good mate Boz offered to guest host this weeks edition of Appytimes and seeing as he is a Podcaster of some note himself, I agreed willingly. Boz sir, you are a diamond and I appreciate your jumping in at the last minute.

As I mentioned, Boz has his own show called “Here Goes Nothing” and is available at www.simplysyndicated.com/shows/heregoesnothing

You must check this show out along with many other fine offerings from the Simply Syndicated Network. Boz and Casey are a couple of blokes who like to wax lyrical about all sorts of stuff and are guaranteed to make you laugh.

Anyway, this weeks show is “Scramble 2″, not something I had myself but after hearing Boz’s review, I’m going to download it tonight. In fact, Boz did such a good job that I hope I haven’t shot myslf in the foot, he’s bloody good you know and sounds far more natural than myself.

And with that I’m going to upload this and go to bed. My head hurts and my sinuses are screaming. Until next time….. Keep Appy

Thank Boz.

Appytimes Episode 21 - NASA

Posted by appytimes on November 8th, 2009

NASAImage.jpg

Hello everybody, hope your week has been good and that you have been enjoying your “ithingy”. It’s been a fairly busy week for me with lots of driving for work and much more to come next week and I recently came off emergency call-out so I’m spending this weekend chilling out. In fact, a little bit later, myself and the ankle biters are going to sit down and watch “The Aristocats” and “The Wizard Of Oz”. What a perfect way to spend a rainy Sunday.

So this week I’m covering an app from those brainiacs at NASA. This is a must have for all those astronomy fans out there. This app. gives details of all the current NASA missions and the plans for the future. If you are a little geeky and enjoy reading facts and figures, then this application is right up you street and at the price of “Free” it’s perfect.

For this weeks show I didn’t write any notes and just decided to play with the app. while I was recording, so if I missed anything critical out then I apologise, but to be honest I quite enjoyed making it this way and I may do that again in the future.

I also briefly mention another fine application called “Star Walk” which at the time of recording was at the special price of 59p. This app. is a wonderful tool for helping you to learn about the stars you can see in your particular neck of the woods and has so much info and lots of lovely graphics that it reminded me of “Stellar Cartography” in “Star Trek Generations”. I really recommend this application and I may even cover it in more depth in a future show.

And It just so happens that I have another recommendation to go with the “Star Walk” app. My good friend Rick Moyer (thats his promo at the start of the show) has just released a CD of tracks to watch the stars by. It’s called “Stargazer” and really is a cool collection of music tracks for accompanying your star gazing evenings. Please visit the link below and have a listen, then go and purchase the album from itunes. Rick has been working on this project for a long time and this guy is a very talented musician. While you’re at it, check out his Star Trek parody page which contains some genuinely brilliant tunes. Cheers Rick

So that’s it for this week. Send me an email with any thoughts. Until next time…. Keep Appy.

Posted by appytimes on November 1st, 2009

Hi everyoTVCatchup.jpgne. Phew!! What a week it’s been, so busy and now I’m on emergency call-out and have been out of the house pretty much all weekend, so this is a very late posting for which I’m sorry. It’s also a very short edition and once again I offer my apologies. However, it is a lovely app. this week, in fact it’s a web application that was recommended to me by a couple of my Twitter buddies and there has been alot of talk about it lately. So with that, I’m going to keep it short and sweet. Until next time….. keep Appy.
