Appytimes Episode 22 - Scramble 2

Posted by appytimes on November 16th, 2009

Scramble2.jpg

Hi all.

I’m feeling pretty bad at the moment. I seem to have been struck down with a man cold and my sinuses and head are giving me all sorts of grief. I announced on Twitter earlier today that I wasn’t going to release an episode this week but there was one bright shining star that came to my rescue.

My good mate Boz offered to guest host this weeks edition of Appytimes and seeing as he is a Podcaster of some note himself, I agreed willingly. Boz sir, you are a diamond and I appreciate your jumping in at the last minute.

As I mentioned, Boz has his own show called “Here Goes Nothing” and is available at www.simplysyndicated.com/shows/heregoesnothing

You must check this show out along with many other fine offerings from the Simply Syndicated Network. Boz and Casey are a couple of blokes who like to wax lyrical about all sorts of stuff and are guaranteed to make you laugh.

Anyway, this weeks show is “Scramble 2″, not something I had myself but after hearing Boz’s review, I’m going to download it tonight. In fact, Boz did such a good job that I hope I haven’t shot myslf in the foot, he’s bloody good you know and sounds far more natural than myself.

And with that I’m going to upload this and go to bed. My head hurts and my sinuses are screaming. Until next time….. Keep Appy

Thank Boz.

Appytimes Episode 21 - NASA

Posted by appytimes on November 8th, 2009

NASAImage.jpg

Hello everybody, hope your week has been good and that you have been enjoying your “ithingy”. It’s been a fairly busy week for me with lots of driving for work and much more to come next week and I recently came off emergency call-out so I’m spending this weekend chilling out. In fact, a little bit later, myself and the ankle biters are going to sit down and watch “The Aristocats” and “The Wizard Of Oz”. What a perfect way to spend a rainy Sunday.

So this week I’m covering an app from those brainiacs at NASA. This is a must have for all those astronomy fans out there. This app. gives details of all the current NASA missions and the plans for the future. If you are a little geeky and enjoy reading facts and figures, then this application is right up you street and at the price of “Free” it’s perfect.

For this weeks show I didn’t write any notes and just decided to play with the app. while I was recording, so if I missed anything critical out then I apologise, but to be honest I quite enjoyed making it this way and I may do that again in the future.

I also briefly mention another fine application called “Star Walk” which at the time of recording was at the special price of 59p. This app. is a wonderful tool for helping you to learn about the stars you can see in your particular neck of the woods and has so much info and lots of lovely graphics that it reminded me of “Stellar Cartography” in “Star Trek Generations”. I really recommend this application and I may even cover it in more depth in a future show.

And It just so happens that I have another recommendation to go with the “Star Walk” app. My good friend Rick Moyer (thats his promo at the start of the show) has just released a CD of tracks to watch the stars by. It’s called “Stargazer” and really is a cool collection of music tracks for accompanying your star gazing evenings. Please visit the link below and have a listen, then go and purchase the album from itunes. Rick has been working on this project for a long time and this guy is a very talented musician. While you’re at it, check out his Star Trek parody page which contains some genuinely brilliant tunes. Cheers Rick

So that’s it for this week. Send me an email with any thoughts. Until next time…. Keep Appy.

Appytimes Episode 20 - TV Catchup

Posted by appytimes on November 1st, 2009

Hi everyoTVCatchup.jpgne. Phew!! What a week it’s been, so busy and now I’m on emergency call-out and have been out of the house pretty much all weekend, so this is a very late posting for which I’m sorry. It’s also a very short edition and once again I offer my apologies. However, it is a lovely app. this week, in fact it’s a web application that was recommended to me by a couple of my Twitter buddies and there has been alot of talk about it lately. So with that, I’m going to keep it short and sweet. Until next time….. keep Appy.

Appytimes Episode 19 - CubeCheater

Posted by appytimes on October 25th, 2009

cubecheaterthumbnail.gifHello everyone, hope you’ve had a great week with your ithingy. This week my new condenser mic. finally arrived and this show marks the first use of it. To be honest though, I’m a little disappointed with the outcome. The result is far less rich or warm than I was hoping for. I believe it’s down to my laptop not have the relevant “kahunas” to give the mic it’s full potential.

So I need to know what you think please. Should I continue to use this mic. which you guys helped me to pay for? or should I go back to using my cheap headset as before? Now my old microphone/headset is more bassy but to me, it doesn’t have the range and sounds a little stuffy, whereas this new mic. has a much better range but does sound like I’m in a warehouse somewhere. I was originally suffering from sibilance but I purchased a poguard and fuzzy head cover which seem to have solved this problem. So please, let me know your views. New or old?

So anyway, this weeks application should bring a warm fuzzy feeling to all those thirty somethings who grew up in the eighties and had one of the best toys ever, the Rubiks Cube. But it was a sod to complete. I heard of people who could solve them within a few minutes but I found the best way was to take it apart and to put it back together in the correct order. Well my friends, this little utility will help to solve that cube once and for all. CubeCheater is a wonderful little tool that really is a genius piece of work. I was initially sceptical that it would work, but I have tried it three times and on each occassion it has completed it within 22 moves. Not much else to say about this really but If you have one of those little cubes laying around gathering dust unsolved, do it, and yourself a favour and get this application. Seeing your cube finally solved after all those years feels pretty good actually.

So, until next time….. Keep Appy

Appytimes Episode 18 - Dictionary.com

Posted by appytimes on October 18th, 2009

Good evening all. Well first I must apologise for the delay in uploading this weeks show. As you may have read on Twitter, It’s my kids fourth birthdayDictionary.jpg tomorrow and this weekend has been about them really. We spent the day at the local swimming pool with all the cousins and parents and a good time was had by all. So once again, I apologise.

But anyway back to this weeks app. This week I’ve gone for a utility, and It’s an app. I’ve actually had on my ithingy for a long time but after reading a Tweet about this app. (cheers @fwosh) I decided It was high time I actually reviewed it, and it was also National Dictionary Day this week so the heavens and the positions of the celestial bodies practically demanded it.

So I keep it short this week simply because of my weekend duties and, to be honest, There’s not alot you can say about “Dictionary.com” So please enjoy this short episode of “Appytimes”.

Oh and before I sign off, I wanted to say Thank You to those who donated to the show this week. That little bit extra cash that came in has allowed me to place an order for that nice condenser mic I had my eye on, and within the next couple of weeks the sound of my deep and mellifluous voice will be heard on “Appytimes” LOL

Thanks once again everyone and until next time….. Keep Appy.

Appytimes Episode 17 - Parking Mania

Posted by appytimes on October 11th, 2009

Good morning everybody. Once again I’m ParkingMania.jpgleaving this to the last minute before I work on the episode. Recording on Saturday is starting to become annoying and I really should get my arse into gear and record earlier in the week.

Anyway, this week I was looking at the top 25 on the itunes downloads and came across this little gem. I’m a sucker for the 59p apps so I downloaded this one straight away and what a bargain it is too, it just needs to be a little longer. Having said that, It’s 59p and it’s going to last at least a couple of hours so what more can you ask for eh?

Not much else to report on this week but I did want to be cheeky and plug my “donate” button. I’ve got my eyes on a lovely little condenser microphone and I’m nearly there with the money. I’m going to buy it whatever and if I have to put the rest of my money towards it then so be it, but having listened to a mates podcast using the same microphone, I had to have it. That’s not to say I’m unhappy with the quality of the mic. I’m using at the moment, but I am aware that it was a very cheap headset and uses the 3.5 mm jack plugs and I’ not sure how much longer the wires will last. So if you’re feeling generous, then please chuck a quid or two my way and it will help to improve the sound quality.

Okay guys, off to brew some coffee and play on Twitter. Until next week…. Keep ‘Appy.

Appytimes Episode 16 - Need For Speed Undercover

Posted by appytimes on October 4th, 2009

Good morning AppNeedForSpeed.jpg. fans. Hope this weekend finds you well. This week I’m reviewing something a little more expensive than usual. Now the whole idea of this podcast was to review free and CHEAP applications, and although this game is £2.99, it’s a very good value for money game and anyone who has played Need For Speed on the consoles will know that the franchise is a good one and ports well onto the iThingy.

Need For Speed is the first racing game I have bought for my ipod Touch and It was pretty much an impulse purchase, you know those kinds of things they put at the till in the Supermarkets that you just have to buy. Well this game was in the top ten and the reviews were pretty much all excellent so I thought “What the heck”, I very rarely spend more than a couple of quid on apps but some recent donations have allowed me to buy this so once again, thanks guys.

At the end of the review and before the outro music, I have added a promo for an audio drama, “Star Wars - In The Shadows” sent to me by my good friend Jen. From what I have heard, it sounds pretty professional and if you like Star Wars and audio books then I suggest you listen to the promo.

Well that’s about all really. Get this game as it is probably the nicest looking game I have seen on iThingy and it plays really well.

Appytimes Episode 15 - CrappyApps Pt.2

Bubblewrap.jpg - 81.54 KbSheepLauncher.jpg - 42.68 KbPOW.jpg - 121.10 KbHaunted.jpg - 15.03 KbPaperToss.jpg - 4.55 Kb

Hello there everybody. I’ve been feeling a little under the weather this week, it seems it’s that time of year again when the kids bring home a multitude of illnesses and we start to suffer again. All of us have either sniffles, sore throats, chesty coughs or a combination of many. So this week I felt a little sorry for myself and thought I’d do another CrappyApps episode, after all, I do have enough of them and from the feedback I received on the last CrappyApps episode it seems you enjoy it.

The irony is though that even though I felt less like preparing than usual, it took longer because I had to go and hunt images and links for each individual application. So much for just throwing a quick episode together.

So that’s about it for this week. I’m gonna go and drink some coffee now and watch the cricket and the F1 a little later, until next time, keep Appy!!

Appytimes Episode 14 - Flight Control

Posted by appytimes on September 19th, 2009

FlightControl.jpgWell hello to everyone and I hope you have had a good week and that you have been enjoying your “iThingy” as much as I have. (did that read as rude as when I wrote it?) Anyway, this week I had the chance to record the show somewhere different, you could say that “Appytimes” went mobile this week. We were at the Mother-in-Laws (no jokes please, she’s actually lovely) and the kids and their mother went out and I found myself at a loose end. So I thought “what the heck, I’ll record in the spare room. So on the plus side it was a quieter environment but on the negative side, I was a plum again when I left the power lead in whilst recording, I hope the very slight humming doesn’t bother you too much.

So it’s taken me an age to review this app. In truth I should have covered “Flight Control” very early on, it is a very popular game after all and is consistently in the favourites list of most people I know who own an “iThingy” and I’ve had it on my own ipod for months. But when it was recently recommended to me via email I though I should finally talk about it. So I hope you enjoy the show even though most of you probably own the game.

So there you go, Flight Control. A gem of a game and at the low price of 59p it’s one you really should buy (if you don’t have it already).

I wanted to mention a few people who generously donated some money to the show. Gordon, Mary and Rick, I really appreciate your donations and I thank you very much.

And thank you to everyone for listening to the show.

Keep Appy!!

Appytimes Episode 13 - Cooliris

Posted by appytimes on September 13th, 2009

CoolirisLogo.jpg

Hello everybody. So this is episode 13 eh? Unlucky for some and it’s strange as I recorded this edtion later than I have any other to date. I had real trouble finding the time to sort this one out, and the irony is that this application is one of the coolest I have seen to date.

The wonderful Cooliris, anyone who uses the Firefox web browser (and shouldn’t we all be?) will probably be quite familiar with this. Since installing Cooliris onto my PC years ago, I just use it instead of Google images. It was an obvious choice to port this onto the “ithingy”. (from now on, instead of having to “ipod Touch/iphone” I’m just going to call it your “ithingy” from now on, thanks to a listener for coming up with that suggestion. This application is ideal for your ithingy and to be honest I’m surprised I didn’t discover this fine app. before now. Have a play about with it, I think you’ll love it.

Thanks to Rick Peete who left a generous donation this week. Mate, it’s so appreciated and will go towards hosting costs which seem to cost a bit more than I anticipated when I started this whole venture.

So thats about it for this week. I’m off out now to celebrate my God-Daughters 1st birthday party with our own little ones. Until next week… keep Appy.
